How to Choose a Medical Lawyer?

The First thing to recognise when choosing a medical lawyer for a clinical claim, regardless of whether it is a surgical, medical or dental matter is whether you actually get on with the lawyer. You are going to have to speak to them quite a lot and its certainly best if you get on.

Second to that, look for lawyers who are members of the Law Society Clinical Negligence Panel. They are the creme de la creme and no matter what anyone else says about themselves, if they are not panel members they are not recognised to a high degree.

Lastly look for lawyers who have medical qualifications, if they dont they will always be second fiddle in this highly speciailist area.

Find a Lawyer you Trust - if after talking you wouldn't have lunch with them dont hire them.

Check out their credentials - less than 5 years post qualification experience means they are new.

Do they have Law Society Accreditation?

Are they Dual Qualified - Do they have medical experience?

Do they have published and reported court decisions that they are responsible for?

How do they charge? Do they sell you insurance, do they recover anything from you at the end

Do you get them thorughout the case or does it transfer to someone else- what continuity is there?

My Name is Graham G Balmforth,  BA (Hons) LLB (Hons), DipFMS Msc. (F.Med) and I am a dual qualified Solicitor and Barrister. I am also an accredited Law Society Clinical Negligence Panel Member.  For the last 12 years I have run the Dental and Medical Negligence teams at the National firm of Applebys Solicitors.  I have high quality experience in litigation of very high value negligence actions (over £1 million) and I am regularly consulted by other firms on complex legal medical issues. I have run civil litigation  at top 100 legal firms for well over 25 years.  I am also a postgraduate forensic medical research scientist and this feeds into my work as a medical lawyer, particularly with regard to fatal injuries and traumatic birth injuries. My dissertation is on the pathological evidence of perinatal autopsy in full term stillborn.

I believe in treating people with integrity and I provide high levels of customer service. I am proud of the fact that a substantial proportion of my work comes from referrals from former clients and from both medical organisations and other law firms, who know that I bring high quality legal services to those who have suffered medical negligence, breach of contract or even criminal injury as a consequence of medical or dental malpractice.... Before you sign an agreement with any firm who promises you "no win no fee" have a chat with me, it will not take you long and you will never regret it.
